Long ago, humans set their sights on colonizing the galaxy because earth was starting to lack resources, but aside from space ships and intergalactic travel they've made Plants. They're power sources in the shape of beings capable of providing all humans need to survive—water, food, light, electricity... You name it, they can make it as long as they're taken care of.

It was supposed to make settling on uninhabitable planets easier.

... There were plenty of plants that were exploited, but there were also many who were cared for. Humans were doing what they needed to do to survive.
